C156 - oink
07.06.2010

The opening “1,2,3 OINK” takes dark melodies and pensive piano stabs and wedges them between rhythms alternating between hilariously phat bassline house sensibilities and half step pressure. The most sinister track on the EP, beats and bass are twisted and ground into buckwild mayhem.
“Can a leprous be trendy?” tests all dancefloor hipsters to stand still with a maniac beat that literally threatens to fall apart as it pummels through its rapidfire rhythm changes and lfo abuse. Constantly rising and falling, the track is unpredictable and surprising, commanding you to move parts of your body you never knew existed.
Ending with the current crowd favourite, “Latin Mayhem”, c156 take their latin musical lineage into the bass music fold with their tongue planted firmly in their cheek. Utilising a plethora of samples from various salsa riddims, this track is straight dancefloor fire that will have you pounding the floorboards or rolling on them in hysterics. Never content with gimmicks, the track maintains the signature c156 attention to detail and ridiculously heavy subsonics, something for heads and dancers alike.
Full of wobbling bass, dancefloor murdering 4/4 rhythms and an overriding sense of humour, this is a perfect addition for the crate for those 3am peaks in the club.

OFFSHORE NEW MIX!!!

New Big Dada signing Offshore presents the second edition of the Bonafide mix series (now officially known as Bonafide Beats, ya hear) and what a heady mix it is.

The Aberdeen born beatmaker throws together a combination of populist hip-hop (T-Pain, Missy Elliot), modern indie electronica; Hudson Mohawke, label mates Thunderheist and Thavius Beck (featuring the excellent Offshore remix for Go), a dab of grime (Terrah Danjah and Trim) and even a couple of West Coast cuts featuring Kurupt, whose solipsistic rap sounds delightfully menacing over Quik’s snap and the general wonky bleeps of the mix.

In short Offshore has given birth to a beautiful monster, as metallic and shiny as it is apocalyptic, dirty and fucked up. Hmmm, nice.

C156, live para mr.gasparov.com

This week we have a very special mix for you! It’s a live mix (as in computers, machines and violins) recorded by C156, a collective based in Barcelona which has been destroying dance floors in the last few months. They are unusual in the sense that their live is performed by four people simultaneously, playing synths, beat boxes, violin, percussion or voices. The result is a uniquely hybrid sound, with blends of Dubstep, Techno or Breaks, which is both intended for the dance floor as well as the brain!

So who are they? Non-other then Cauto (check his past interview & mix for mrgasparov.com), Dr. Res, The Gardener (AKA Amph) and Drome. If you live in Barcelona, or even if you don’t, it’s very likely that you heard their names, since all of them have been active in different underground fronts for many years. They now belong to the Disboot label/collective, a group of incredibly talented people who have been releasing some serious music lately.

Last year they released their first EP, which you can listen/buy here, and in February Disboot will be releasing the second C156 EP - 12″ and digital -, which includes the tracks ‘1,2,3,Oink’, ‘Can a Leprous be Trendy?’ and ‘Latin Mayhem’, all of which you can listen too in the mix below. I think in all of my last gigs I’ve played at least one of these tracks, so I’d definitely say that it’s very worth buying!

This time there’s no interview because there’s too many of them, but you can check Cauto’s interview since it focuses a lot on the C156 project. Moltes gràcies nois!

BOOMKAT SAYS:

“Monkeysteak’s long threatened Steakhouse Records finally precipitates it’s debut load with two tracks of hybrid dub-techno/2-step from Portuguese producers. Mr Gasparov hails from Lisbon and apparently uses a synth made from an old McDonalds till point, togther with graphics tablets and Midi-Controllers to manufacture a jumpy blend of hard-hitting subs and technoid 2-step on ‘1975′, think El-B meets Aphex Twin under a tropical sky. On the flip Octapush fuse UK Garage with skittering electronica and chanted tribal vocals on ‘Ai Nadia’, and itchin’ 2-step with female vocals on ‘Laika Likes It’. One for the rave, Dave, and fans of Untold, Atki2 or Bass Clef. Sick twelve!”
